Private John William Cawcutt M2/181850 of the Royal Army Service Corps served in BE Africa and was the son of John William and Jane Cawcutt (née Hallaway); husband of Rosetta Cawcutt (née Clarke) of Cross Cottage, Bishopsteignton. He was born in Reading in 1885, he died 2 August 1917 aged 32 years on return from war and is buried in the Higher Cemetery, Exeter.
Private Richard Gill was born and baptised in Bishopsteignton in June, 1883 to his father James and mother Sarah Jane. He married Elizabeth Anne Townsend (born in Bishopsteignton in 1887) at St John’s Church on the 22nd October, 1904 and was a general labourer. The family lived at The Terrace, Bishopsteignton. He enlisted in the 2nd Battalion Devonshire Regiment as a private 26096 and according to military records died on 7th March 1917 of wounds received in France and Flanders.
278881 Leading Stoker Frederick John Manning of the Royal Navy HMS Doris, was the son of the late William and Elizabeth P. Manning, of 6, Fore St, Bishopsteignton. Born in Bishopsteignton on the 18th Jan 1875 he lost his life on 31 May 1918 aged 43 years and is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
