Bishopsteignton Heritage continues to work hard for the community and has been nominated to receive the Bishopsteignton Parish Council 2024/25 ‘Community Recognition Award’. This prestigious award proffers £50 and a Certificate and lots of photographic opportunities: James Hooper will have to have a shave!!

In addition, one of the Bishopsteignton Heritage Trustees, namely Kim Ford, is off to a Buckingham Palace Garden Party, in recognition of her wonderful services to the community. Kim is currently practising her curtsy, buying a new hat and learning how to eat with a knife and fork!

The Bishopsteignton Heritage website has recently had new articles: ‘All we need is an Audience Part 3’ by Pat Yesin; ‘Bishopsteignton Playgroup, Part 1’ by Natalia Urry-Mackay; and, ‘The Manor Inn’ by village patriarch Colin Back…..all fascinating reads.

Mr Colin Back and yours truly have recently survived a ‘Colin & Dave, Part 2’ evening, in the Village Hall, regaling tales of village escapades and our subsequent life on the run.

In last month’s Chronicle, we paid great homage to the photography competition winners. Although no expert myself, the photographs themselves were absolutely brilliant in their diversity and quality. Needless to say, the photographs have been displayed in the BH Hub.

Whilst in conversation in my working capacity recently, I was asked where I lived, ‘Bishopsteignton’ I replied! ‘Bishopsteignton?’ they replied, a little surprised, ‘Bishopsteignton is Devon’s equivalent of Beverly Hills!’ I did feel quite proud I must admit, whilst thinking about our A-list herd of British Friesian cows that (formally or formerly) traipsed through the village! Yep, just like Beverley Hills!!

Finally, from the archives….. from my repressed inner traffic warden ‘condition’:

On 27 April 1900 the Teignmouth Post and Gazette reported:
Cycling without a light
Arthur Taylor and Florence Taylor, visitors staying in Bishopsteignton were fined five shillings each plus four shillings and six pennies costs for riding their bicycles on the highway – the Bishopsteignton Road, without lights! P.B. Hill proved the case. Good ole P.B. Hill!

On 28 April 1950 the Western Times reported:
Motorist fined
At Exeter Magistrates Court, Dr Rosaleen Cooper of ‘Brendon’, Bishopsteignton, was fined £2 for causing an obstruction by leaving a motor car at Goldsmith Street, Exeter, for 55 minutes. If my memory serves me well, Dr Cooper had a light yellow Cortina Mk I when I was a kid. You didn’t dare play football in the road when her or Dot Perkins drove by ….. 2 nd gear foot down. Both ladies were only just able to see over the steering wheel!

On 14 April 1900 Exeter Flying Post reported:
THE PRIMROSE LEAGUE AND HOME DEFENCE
Views of Devon Habitations
Colonel F. Tombs of Bishopsteignton declares that all state funded schools should be compelled to give physical drill to the boys; that boys should have opportunities for target practice! Also, gymnasia should be provided and route marching countenanced and the resident gentry should be told to encourage the inculcation of patriotism. That’s the spirit Colonel ….. I’ll have a word with the school PTA.
