As we look back at the gorgeous early April weather, we no doubt keep our fingers crossed, hoping the summer months will be as sunny. But irrespective of the weather, folks, BH are delighted to inform you that we are involved with the 80th Anniversary VE Day celebrations in the village.

Among other activities the Village Beacon will be lit on Faldon on Thursday May 8 th at 8.45pm, followed on Sunday 11 th by a dance demonstration and optional lesson by the South West Lindy Hoppers at the Community Centre at 10am until noon.

A traditional style street party will be hosted in Clanage Street by BH, the Parish Council and the Old Commercial public house, featuring, the fabulous Liberty Sisters who will be performing alongside the Lindy Hoppers – come and show off your newly acquired dancing skills!

We are also delighted to have received the 2024-25 Community Recognition Award for “Fantastic services to the community, throughout the parish of Bishopsteignton and beyond” this reward bears testament to the hard work of all the BH staff, volunteers and trustees. The push towards museum status continues…

From the archives, missing from last month:

Thoughts from my repressed inner traffic warden:

On 27 April 1900, the Teignmouth Post and Gazette reported:
Cycling without a light – Arthur Taylor and Florence Taylor, visitors staying in Bishopsteignton were fined five shillings each plus four shillings and six pennies costs for riding their bicycles on the highway – the Bishopsteignton Road, without lights! P.B. Hill proved the case – Good ole P.B. Hill!

On 28 April 1950, the Western Times reported:
Motorist fined – At Exeter Magistrates Court, Dr Rosaleen Cooper of ‘Brendon’, Bishopsteignton, was fined £2 for causing an obstruction by leaving a motor car at Goldsmith Street, Exeter, for 55 minutes. If my memory serves me well, Dr Cooper had a light yellow Cortina Mk I when I was a kid. You didn’t dare play football in the road when her or Dot Perkins drove by ….. 2 nd gear foot down. Both ladies were only just able to see over the steering wheel!

And from this month “back in the day” another noteworthy news article from the archives:

On the 24 th of May 1950, Torbay Express and South Devon Echo reported a poor soul from Bishopsteignton in front of the Official Receiver with debts of £293 and 10 shillings quoting the following: “A man may have a pile of brains but if he has no capital he is sunk”

An advert from the Western Morning News 23rd May 1950 reads: WANTED DOMESTIC HELP: good home, hours, wages. Suit woman with a baby – Delamore, Bishopsteignton. How times have changed!

And finally, once again from April, on the 14th 1900, the Exeter Flying Post reported: THE PRIMROSE LEAGUE AND HOME DEFENCE Views of Devon Habitations – Colonel F. Tombs of Bishopsteignton declares that all state funded schools should be compelled to give physical drill to the boys; that boys should have opportunities for target practice! Also, gymnasia should be provided and route marching countenanced and the resident gentry should be told to encourage the inculcation of patriotism. That’s the spirit Colonel…. I’ll have a word with the school PTA.
