Occupiers of Venn: 1249 – 1939

A summary of the occupiers of Venn Farm, Shepherds Lane, Bishopsteignton, taken from the official parish records.

Venn was probably a family holding when Bishop Leofric received Tainton/Radway from King Edward.

13th Century

1249          The Bishop’s Records show that Walter le Thailleur held Venn for one fifth of a Knight’s fee.

14th Century

1303          The Bishop’s Records show that Richard le Tailleur held Venn for one fifth of a knight’s fee.

16th Century

1524          The Devon Subsidy Roll lists Geoffrey Wylkyn as having a good agricultural income and Nicholas Wylkyn as having a small agricultural income but it does not name the property.

1543          The Devon Subsidy Roll lists Geoffrey Wylkyn as having a good agricultural income, John with  a medium such, with Nicholas and William with small such incomes.

1569          The Devon Muster Roll lists John Wylkyn with a fair income from goods, John Wylykn with a similar income and Geoffrey Wylkyn with no income.

1576          The Baptism Register records the baptism of John Wilkin the son of Nicholas Wilkin to Ven.

1588          The Marriage Register records the marriage between Thomas Jaynes and Margerye Wilken at Venn.

1597          The Burial Register records the burial of Joan Wilkin at Venn widow.

17th Century

1628          The Burial Register records the burial of Jeffrye Wilkin of ffen.

1641          The Devon Protestation Return lists Richard Wilkin and William Wilkin.

18th Century

1700          The Churchwardens’ Records show that Nicholas Cove was churchwarden ‘for his estate at Venn’

1729          The Churchwardens’ Records show Thomas Narramore was churchwarden for Higher Venn.

1736          The list of Sir John Lear’s Debts names Thomas Narramore as tenant at Higher and Lower Venn.

1753          The Churchwardens’ Records show that Thomas Narramore was churchwarden for Higher Venn, gent.

1754          The Churchwardens’ Records show that Thomas Narramore was churchwarden for Lower Venn.

1775          The Churchwardens’ Records show that Thomas Narramore was churchwarden for Venn.

1784          An Apprenticeship document shows that John Cock was apprenticed to Thomas Narramore, gent for Lower Venn.

1786          The Baptism Register records the baptism of William the son of William and Thomazine Moor at Venn.

1787          The Burial Register records the burial of Mrs Jane Narramore aged 65 at Venn.

1790          An Apprenticeship document shows that John Sivell was apprenticed to Thomas Narramore for Higher Venn.

1795          The Churchwardens’ Records show that Thomas Narramore was churchwarden for Venn.

1799          The Burial Register records the burial of Elizabeth Narramore, Venn aged 48.

19th Century

1806          The Churchwardens’ Records show that Thomas Narramore was churchwarden for Higher Venn.

1808          The Churchwardens Records show that Thomas Narramore, gent, was churchwarden for Lower Venn and again in 1810.

1812          The Land Tax Assessment records Thomas Narramore as the owner and occupier of Venn.

1814          The Baptism Register records the baptism of a child Thomas and Sarah Cornish, farmer of Venn.

1828          The Land Tax Assessment lists Thomas Narramore and John Wills as occupying Venn.

1833          The Voters’ List shows William Cornish as Owner and Occupier of Venn.

1840          The Bishopsteignton Tithe List shows Ann Narramore as owner and William Cornish as Occupier of Venn.

1851          The Census shows George Henry Cornish, 38 as the occupant of Venn 200 acres.

1861          Census

1866          Kelly’s Directory shows William Parsons as occupant of Venn as does Morris’ Directory for 1870.

1871           Census William Parsons 47  as occupant of Venn Farm 249 Acres

1881           Census John Bale, 25, Farmer Venn Farm, 205 Acres

1883          Kelly’s Directory shows the occupant of Venn as James Hamlyn, farmer.

1889          Kelly’s Directory shows the occupant as James Hamlyn farmer.

1890          White’s Directory shows the occupant as Jas. Hamlyn and Son, farmers.

1891         Census James Hamlyn, 60, Farmer Venn Farm

1897          Kelly’s Directory shows the occupant as James Hamlyn, farmer.

20th Century

1901          Census shows John Wills Dymond 33 as occupant of Venn Farm

1902          Kelly’s Directory shows the occupant as John William Dymond, farmer.

1911          Census shows John Wills Dymond 43 as occupant of Venn Farm (12 rooms)

1914          Kelly’s Directory shows the occupant as John Wills Dymond Farmer.  This is repeated in 1919.

1926          Kelly’s Directory shows the occupant as John Wills Dymond, farmer.

1934          Venn was sold by Mr Dymond.
