This beautiful photograph, taken by Ann Waller on West Furlong in Bishopsteignton, tells us much about the feeding habits and the sociability of this bird. The goldfinch is one of the most common garden birds in the UK; in fact, the goldfinches’ fondness for niger and sunflower seeds in garden bird feeders is seen as one of the reasons for their strong increase in population since 1995: monitoring between 1995 and 2023 showed an increase of 152%.
The common toad is one of only two toads native to the UK; the other toad is the natterjack, which is smaller than the common toad, much rarer, and tends to live in coastal areas, in sand dunes and sandy heaths. Woodbine Cottage in West Street has, over the years, been a working dairy as well as a home. It was connected to Delamore, the house on Forder Lane, and called Woodbine Dairy and Delamore Dairy at different times.
Now that I have some spare time on my hands, I thought it apt to extend from my previous articles ‘Rooted in the Land: The Cornish Family of Wolfsgrove and Beyond’ and ‘The Cornish Family Name’ by telling what I know of my Grandmother and the Ridgeway family’s presence in the village, who appeared rooted for generations in our lovely Devon village.
Between 1200-1600, Bishopsteignton was a bishop-controlled estate on the River Teign, closely linked to Teignmouth, as ‘West Teignmouth’ formed part of its parish. In 1200 this area along the estuary was called ‘Teynton’, from the Anglo-Saxon ‘Tain’ or ‘Taintona’ meaning ‘water’.
Fulford Cottages are located at the top of Clanage Street, opposite the Old Commercial Inn, although they are no longer referred to as such. Fulford Terrace was another name for them but they are now incorporated into Clanage Street with one of the cottages, Church Cottage, being in West Street.
