The Story of the Fore St. Butchers and the People – part 1

If you walk down Fore Street today, past the cottages that lean gently into one another, you might not realise how much life has unfolded behind those doors. Yet this short stretch – numbers 23 to 33A Fore Street – has been an interesting stage for more than two centuries of village history. At its heart stood the butcher’s shop at number 25, a place that fed Bishopsteignton in every sense of the word. Begin the story here in the first of three articles.

The Ridgeways of Bishopsteignton, not all that wander are lost

Investigations into the Ridgeway family of Bishopsteignton have continued to uncover many new branches, connections and stories that extend far beyond the village in which the family was rooted. What began as an exploration of the Ridgeway name and its place within the history of Bishopsteignton has now developed into a much wider search, tracing descendants and family connections across generations and, ultimately, across the world.

Carduelis Carduelis – The Goldfinch

This beautiful photograph, taken by Ann Waller on West Furlong in Bishopsteignton, tells us much about the feeding habits and the sociability of this bird. The goldfinch is one of the most common garden birds in the UK; in fact, the goldfinches’ fondness for niger and sunflower seeds in garden bird feeders is seen as one of the reasons for their strong increase in population since 1995: monitoring between 1995 and 2023 showed an increase of 152%.

As our new year’s resolutions wain – from joining a gym to having a non alcoholic January – Bishopsteignton Heritage looks forward into 2026.
It reminds me of having a new ‘jotter’ or new book at school where the handwriting on the fresh new page was orderly and neat. The back pages were a scrawl….
There is certainly no lack of commitment and drop of standards at BH.
