Believed to be 11393 Private William Taylor of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. He was the son of George and Elizabeth Taylor and was born in Kingsteignton in 1893. William died on the 6th October 1916 aged 23 years in France with no known burial. He is remembered on the Loos Memorial.
Major Thomas Robert Eaton Wybault Warren-Swettenham was born in Cheltenham and married Emmété Florence Cope whose parents lived in Cockhaven Road, Bishopsteignton. He was a professional soldier before the Great War and was killed in action in Eloi, Flanders in 1915.
William Henry Newton was born in Colaton Raleigh near Ottery St. Mary on September 21st 1894. By 1911 the family had moved to Higher Holcombe, Teignmouth presumably for work as William was registered as a “cow boy”. He joined the Royal Navy on 11th March 1913, aged 18 years, as a stoker. He was killed in action on the 31st May 1916, aged 21 years, at the Battle of Jutland.

Thomas James Kidston was born in Bishopsteignton on the 28th March 1876 to John and Louisa Kidston. He was a Leading Stoker in the Royal Navy with the Service No 280054 serving on HMS Ariadne. He is described as 5’5″ with light brown hair, light blue eyes and a fair, fresh complexion. He lost his life at sea when the Ariadne was sunk off Beachy Head in July 1917.
44301 Private Stephen George Ridgeway of the 2/4th Battalion, the Royal Berkshire Regiment was the son of Charles and Minnie Amelia Ridgeway, of Mount Radford, Bishopsteignton. Born in Bishopsteignton in the June Quarter of 1899 he lost his life on 24th June 1918 aged 19 years.
25581 Lance Corporal Charles Henry Payne of the 6th Battalion, the Somerset Light Infantry was the son of John and Ellen Louise Payne, of Cockhaven Road, Bishopsteignton and husband of Sarah Jane Payne, of 88, Orchard Portman, Taunton. Born in Shaldon in 1889, he died on 16 September 1916 aged 27 years.
42625 Private Clifford Edward Wallis of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment was the eldest son of Clifford B. and Eleanor Ann Wallis (née Swain), of School House, Bishopsteignton. Born in Bishopsteignton on 16th Jan 1896 he died 25th April 1918 aged 22 years.
35244 Private Harry Martin of the 2/4th Battalion, the Wiltshire Regiment was the son of George and Frances Martin. He was born in Bishopsteignton in the June Quarter of 1880 and died Thursday 28th November 1918, aged 38 years. He is buried in the Benares Cantonment Cemetery in India.
Private Harry Garland Vanstone of the 2/4th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment was the son of Thomas and Amelia Vanstone, of 2, Fore St, Bishopsteignton. He was born in Bishopsteignton in the December Quarter of 1893 and died on the 7th January 1917 aged 24 years in Mesopotamia. He is buried at the Kantara War Memorial Cemetery in Egypt.
